The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway
THE PERMANENT WAY
"2002/2003 track work"
Llanfair Station
Track work this winter started with the Autumn track week commencing with the laying of a "NEW" crossover for Llanfair station. New 50lb rail, fixings and sleepers shown after completion of the job.
Dirty Lane to Dolarddyn
The Spring 2003 track work was concentrated near
"Dirty Lane" (MP 6/0 to 5/II) to Dolarddyn Straight. Lifting old 45lb
rail and mainly heavy ex London Transport hard wood sleepers. These were
replaced with new (South African) 60lb (30kg/m) rails and the last of the
Australian Karri hard wood sleepers and the new hard wood's from Brazil's
sustainable forests. Fitting of rails was by MOD (Ministry of Defense) Clips and
screws which have been found to be more secure than the base plate and spike's
used before.
SYLFAEN
Work continued to replace the main line through Sylfaen Station which was lifted last year when the 56lb ex Tanat Valley rail was moved over the Sylfaen summit, near MP 3/I, to extend the 56lb lengths which now run from Sylfaen (Wlp end points) over the summit by a further 10 lengths.
All in all a busy 2002/03 winter on the track.
