Chinese Railways

On a visit to northern China with Rhys Owen we covered many rail miles and saw many steam trains, these few pages can only give a glimpse of what we saw and of the many new friends we made during our travels.

The Steam Depot at Hohhot - Inner Mongolia

8264 at Hohhot depot

2-8-2 Loco 8264 just leaving Hohhot freight loco depot after a light overhaul. This depot overhauls steam loco's for local industrial lines.

Staff at Hohhot loco depot

Inside Hohhot engine repair shops some of the staff and visitors stand perilously close to a large wheel turning lathe.

"Shenyang Railway Steam Locomotive Exhibition Hall"

Shenyang Museum entrance

Visitors with the museum guide (center) and their hosts. Despite the inference of an indoor "Hall" the main exhibits are outside in the elements and only a small room for some models and memorabilia. Their are some 16 loco's from c1907 and including a former South Manchurian Railways Japanese built (1934) streamlined 4-6-2 number 571 Class SL7.
